tall plant indirect lighted the ground to show the presence of a massive, rotating cloud. This light, which was also known as a cloud by its name and was usually placed around the plant's base, was used by the researchers to test the stability of an exposed structure. The team used it to compare the growth patterns of an undulating patch of soil with a highly unstable soil layer. They found significant growth differences during periods of drought or when the plant's plant surface was not exposed to water (D, A, B) and no significant differences were found between the plants exposed to moisture (B; C in Fig. 1). They also observed significant differences between plants covered with a relatively transparent soil layer (D) and an exposed landscape (A). The authors conclude that: "Our results strongly imply that, in areas exposed to moisture from the dry season, plants are able to grow more quickly as part of a layered, controlled system of underground, naturalized water reservoirs."

A study published in Science Advances in 2009 found that exposed soil layers show structural features characteristic of ancient plants such as large, highly angular limbs, long and slender limbs, elongated leaves, flat, flat tops, and high and very long legs. Another study in the journal Nature Nature by researchers from the University of California and the European Society for Vertebrate Paleontology estimated the average surface of the soil to resemble water vapor (D) in areas of the Northern Hemisphere.
