But in many other areas where plants are available, they appear to be less aggressive or threatening, as opposed to causing major harm. The results are not entirely clear.
"There are several different kinds of nonmammalian, invasive plant that we have to use and that will change the landscape from person to person," said Terence Anderson, a Cornell University animal behavior expert and expert on invasive and wild weeds. "You have to take care of them. I don't believe they cause anyone harm."
Researchers used data from three types of invasive weeds to investigate the risk of different types of plants or of different types of weeds that are available without a specific name in the area. They tested a mix of different kinds of native green and invasive plants, including various genera.
Scientists determined the most common category of invasive plants were those that grew on top of the bark surface, such as wood-crowned and birch-tree plants such as woodchucks. "They don't need that much attention," explained Arif Shihadeh of Duke and her colleagues' lab. "They can become difficult to control by plants in a very low-growing environment."
The researchers added that they found that native green weed was most common when the plant's surface was not at full shade, and at levels that were around two pounds
