This research, published in the journal Ecology Letters, and its follow-up work with the National Center for Chemical Toxicology (NCATS) have placed the "no-recovery" button on the National Registry of Dangerous Substances that may need to be repealed now to save these plants from further extinction.

"Faced with all the evidence, you've gotta make good guesses, and we're now in the end that this is where the evidence is telling us we need to stop using pesticides and herbicides on these species," said Chris Anderson, senior associate director for the NCATS research team.

Anderson said the most effective way to reduce insecticide and herbicide residues on plants is to encourage the conversion of nutrients to plant chemicals. However, the goal is to avoid harm to wild and endangered animals.

But experts say the current level of use of pesticides and herbicides on these plants is growing. While the numbers are rising, Anderson said, "it's much more pervasive."

"There's a lot of bad information out there, as well as a lot of anecdotal evidence that you may see from your local public health department about how to control these pests," he said.
