"When we were researching our approach for this study in 2004, we knew that there weren't any good studies on whether the poison can be easily administered," said Shigihara, who added that he also studied poison-resistant pets.
He also noted that "more experiments are needed and we will need more resources at the laboratory so that research can be pursued."
The study found that rats and mice showed elevated titer in feces after exposure to 10-12 doses of stenotyrchene. (A typical blood sample contained 100 milligrams—enough to make poison poison—and was 0.02 milligrams for each rat used to administer the toxin.)
The findings are expected to help determine which strains of rodents and mice do get enough stenotyrchene to kill human teeth.

"Many people believe that stenotyrchylene is simply toxic—that it kills bacteria and viruses rather than making other poisons to kill them," said Shigihara. "If scientists want to see which species of rats to avoid in a field such as this we should be asking the question: In order to test or to detect which species of rats and mice get this toxin, which strains and their exact characteristics will we test, how do we test it
