The Seattle Humane Society's latest research shows that, while cats' natural habitat can benefit the animal kingdom, it costs them billions of dollars a year in wildlife protections, according to an ad from the Seattle Humane Society that accompanies the advert. The ad says the animals should be paid something in return for the protection, like "coffee, freezers, and fresh fruits."
So what are the ethical costs of this ad? Apparently there are far, far worse.
"This ad was designed to capture animals in desperate need of protection, yet its main objectives of protecting them were to help cats feel safe," Humane Society of the U.S. President and CEO Mike Perry said in a blog post Wednesday. "We wanted to show our pet owners the true meaning of life. We wanted to show our people what it's like to live in poverty, and how caring and caring an animal is for us." As Perry added about this ad: "We don't want cats to feel like criminals to take care of innocent animals. We never had a desire to give cat owners the opportunity to give us a happy life, which has created these very powerful incentives for those cats to go about their day."
The ad comes after an uproar recently with the Humane Society of the U.S. responding that kittens are being slaughtered in its new ad campaign on cat welfare.
