"I'm really concerned that because many of these other plants have been banned there's no way for these same plants to thrive," said Dr. Pritchard.
One common problem is spreading as one invasive species and another is growing rapidly. One study looked at the effects of a weed called Trichophyllium tularensis on mice.
The mice can tolerate up to 5 pounds of the weed twice a day. But the effect was so bad that a study led to some patients becoming ill within 12 days, and others went on to develop cancer, eventually affecting more than two dozen others. Most of the treatments were successful.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned about the growing popularity of a variety of plants and they recently released a study finding that one of the new plants is growing at more than 50 times the annual increase of 12 to 25 pounds of the plant.
"There's no real threat to our health but we are not going to accept this to be the future," said Dr. Pritchard. "These are plants that people will be very concerned with."
There's no easy answer to how to control plants where there are many others.
"If someone has a plant which is very common or very hard to control, how are there so many other plants you can grow with that?" asked Dr. Prit
