The police were not satisfied with their initial investigation and the accused was sent to trial. But the trial's conclusion was rejected by a judge on June 17, where a jury found him guilty on two counts of first-degree murder.

In a written statement read to the court, Solicitor-General Manon-Chapil-Guenther Vazquez said he is "very disappointed with the court's decision" and would "continue to look into the issue of mercy in this matter."
